Do Swiss citizens need a visa for Indonesia?
Yes. Switzerland is one of the 97 countries whose citizens can use the visa on arrival, and the easiest way to get it is online — that is the eVOA. The fee is IDR 500,000, the stay is 30 days, and it can be extended once by another 30. You apply at evisa.imigrasi.go.id before you fly.
The passport needs at least six months' validity on the date of entry, blank pages, and you need a return or onward ticket with a fixed date. Since 1 October 2025 everyone also has to complete the electronic All Indonesia arrival card: it replaced the customs, immigration, health and quarantine forms at once, opens no earlier than 72 hours before landing and produces a QR code. On Bali there is also the tourist levy — IDR 150,000 per person, paid once.
And one thing about the document itself: not every Swiss passport will do. More on that below.
What the e-VOA gives you
Point by point: how you apply, how long the visa itself is valid and how long you may actually stay.
- How it is issued. Entirely online, through the Indonesian immigration portal. You receive a PDF with a number and a QR code. Print it or keep it on your phone.
- Validity. 90 days from the date of issue. You can enter on any day inside that window, including the last one.
- Length of stay. 30 days, counted from the day you cross the border. The day you land counts as day one.
- Extension. Once, for another 30 days. The maximum on this visa is 60 days in one trip.
- Entries. Single. If you pop over to Singapore for a weekend, the visa is used up and you need a new one to come back.
❗ Planning more than 60 days? Do not rely on the e-VOA. Apply for a C1 tourist visa before you fly. You cannot switch from an e-VOA to a C1 inside Indonesia, you would have to leave the country and apply from abroad.
How the extension works
Start the extension about two weeks before your 30 days run out. Do not leave it to the last day. The application goes in online, then immigration gives you a date to come to the nearest office once, for a photo and fingerprints. The official extension fee is IDR 500,000.
We handle the paperwork and the appointment for you. If you already know you want the full 60 days, take the "e-VOA for 60 days" option in the price list below and stop thinking about it.
What documents you need
The list is short, and most of it is already on your phone.
- A colour scan or photo of the bio-data page of your passport. It has to be valid for at least 6 months on the day you enter Indonesia.
- A photo on a plain white background. A phone selfie is fine, no studio needed.
- The address where you will stay in Indonesia. A hotel booking is enough.
- A booking for a return or onward flight.
❗ Every child needs a separate visa, including infants. A child cannot travel on a parent's e-VOA.
Two things that catch Swiss travellers out.
The six months are counted from the date printed in your passport. Indonesian officers do not care when it was issued. Look at the expiry date on the photo page and count from there.
A provisional passport will not do. Swiss travellers have repeatedly been refused entry on a temporary document, and the FDFA warns about it in a line of its own. More on this below.

Express service
Only an ordinary Swiss passport will get you in
This is the sharpest warning Bern gives about Indonesia, and it is not hypothetical. The FDFA advisory states it plainly: Swiss travellers have repeatedly been refused entry because they held a provisional passport, so for travel to Indonesia use only an ordinary Swiss passport.
A provisional passport is the emergency document issued when your old one is lost, stolen or damaged, or when the regular one will not be ready in time. Inside Europe it usually passes without comment, which is exactly why people fly on further with it. At an Indonesian airport that ends at the desk.
Two practical consequences. Renew a passport that expires in six months or so well before you book — do not plan to fix it with an emergency document three days before departure. And if your passport disappears mid-trip, remember that the replacement travel document will take you home but will not get you back into Indonesia.
The standard rule applies too: at least six months' validity on the date of entry, and blank pages for stamps.
Who is responsible for Swiss nationals in Indonesia
Start with what does not apply. EU Council Directive 2015/637 does not cover Swiss citizens. Switzerland is not in the Union, and a Swiss national cannot walk into a French or German consulate "as a European". Switzerland has its own network instead, and in Indonesia it exists.
- The Swiss Embassy in Jakarta — Jl. H.R. Rasuna Said, Blok X 3/2, Kuningan, Jakarta Selatan 12950, +62 21 525 60 61. The only place in the country with full consular powers.
- An honorary consulate in Denpasar — Jalan Ganetri 9D, Gatot Subroto Timur, 80235 Denpasar, +62 361 264 149, bali@honrep.ch.
- An honorary consulate in Makassar, for travel beyond Java and Bali.
Now the limits. The FDFA says the Bali office assists Swiss travellers in distress through illness, accident or theft — and then states outright that this honorary representation has no consular powers: it issues neither visas nor Swiss passports, performs no notarial acts and handles no civil-status matters.
So on Bali you get help, contact and advice; the document itself is made in Jakarta. Budget days, not hours, and do not book a tight departure.
Consular protection has boundaries generally, and the FDFA lists them honestly: it does not get you out of prison, is not a rescue service, runs no investigations, provides no medical treatment, is not a travel agency, and does not pay your fines, bail or lawyers' fees.
What basic health insurance actually covers
Many Swiss travellers assume compulsory health insurance (KVG/LAMal) simply "works everywhere". It works, but within a hard limit.
Under the rules published by the Federal Office of Public Health, for an emergency outside the EU and EFTA the basic insurance reimburses at most twice what the same treatment would cost in Switzerland. For inpatient care abroad the ceiling is 90 per cent of the Swiss cost, because at home the cantons carry a large share of the hospital bill and abroad they carry none. The FOPH itself advises taking out supplementary travel cover.
Two reasons this matters in Indonesia. Outside the big cities medical care is limited, and hospitals normally demand payment in advance of treatment — nobody waits for a Swiss insurer to reimburse anything. And the biggest line in a serious case is not the treatment but the medical flight home, which basic insurance is not designed for.
One detail missing from most countries' advisories: the FDFA warns that people with rhesus-negative blood may have difficulty obtaining a transfusion. Rh-negative blood is rare in Indonesia and a private clinic on Bali may simply not have it. If that is your blood group, treat evacuation cover as essential.
Public hospitals effectively do not serve foreigners, so the real choice is the private clinics around Denpasar and Kuta. Hyperbaric chambers for divers exist only on Java and Bali.
The paragraph Bern writes about Bali specifically
The Swiss advisory has a line devoted to Bali, and it is not about volcanoes. The FDFA warns that extreme caution is needed with timeshare contracts on Bali: several interested parties lost their deposits and never got into the holiday apartments they had paid for.
The scheme targets holidaymakers. Someone approaches you on the beach or in a hotel lobby with a gift — a free dinner, a tour, a prize draw — walks you to a presentation, and ninety minutes later you have signed a multi-year contract and paid a deposit. There is no refund, and sometimes no property. The rule is simple: on holiday, sign nothing involving real estate that wants money today.
Countrywide, the FDFA advises against travel to Papua because of recurring armed clashes between pro-independence groups and federal security forces, and urges heightened caution in Central Sulawesi around Poso and in Aceh. On drugs the wording is blunt: multi-year prison sentences even for minimal quantities of any substance, and the death penalty is not excluded. Indonesia is seismically and volcanically active, and eruptions and earthquakes close airports.
Finally, Travel Admin — the FDFA's app and online trip registration. Its own phrasing: register your trip abroad so that we can contact you if the security situation deteriorates markedly. Five minutes for a two-week holiday, and a real difference during an eruption or airport closure. The Indonesia advisory is updated regularly — the chapter on special legal requirements was last revised on 20 January 2026, so check it again before you fly.
Your pre-flight checklist
Run through this the night before. These are exactly the things passport control will ask for.
- Passport valid at least 6 months from the date of entry, with two blank pages.
- The e-VOA saved on your phone and printed.
- The All Indonesia arrival card completed and its QR code saved.
- If you are flying to Bali, the tourist levy paid and its QR code saved.
What is the All Indonesia arrival card?
It is a free electronic form that every traveller arriving in Indonesia has to complete. It became compulsory on 1 October 2025 and replaced four separate documents at once: the immigration arrival card, the customs declaration, the quarantine declaration and the health pass.
You fill it in on the official site or in the All Indonesia app. The window is three days before arrival, and you can also do it on landing, though filling it in before you board is calmer. Once you submit it, a QR code arrives by email. That QR code is what you show at passport control.
❗ The arrival card is not a visa and does not replace one. You need both.
How much is the Bali tourist levy?
IDR 150,000 per person, about USD 9.50. It applies to everyone who does anything touristy on the island, children included, whatever the purpose of the trip.
You pay on the official site or in the Love Bali app. Cash is not accepted, only cards, bank transfer or QRIS. The levy is paid once per trip and any time before you leave Indonesia, but the sensible moment is before departure. Save the QR code you get by email: it is scanned as you walk out of the arrivals area at Ngurah Rai Airport or at Benoa seaport.
Landing in Jakarta and never going to Bali? Then you do not pay it.
What happens if you overstay
The fine is IDR 1,000,000 for every day beyond your permitted stay, and you pay it at the airport as you leave. A long overstay is a different matter and can end in detention, deportation and a ban on returning. Immigration does not accept "I lost track of the dates", so check the stamp in your passport on the day you arrive and set a reminder.
Staying longer than 60 days
Two visas cover almost every case.
The C1 tourist visa gives 60 days and can be extended twice without leaving the country, up to 180 days in total. It needs a local guarantor, and MyVisa.World acts as one.
The D1 multiple-entry visa is valid for 1, 2 or 5 years and gives 60 days on every entry, with no limit on how many times you come and go. It suits people who visit Indonesia several times a year.
Why apply through MyVisa.World
We are officially registered in Indonesia and work with the immigration service directly, without middlemen. Your application is checked by a person before it is submitted, so a blurred passport scan or a photo with a shadow on the face does not turn into a refusal a week later.
Standard processing is 2 days. If you are flying tomorrow, the express service submits your application ahead of the queue and the visa usually arrives within 2 hours. We accept cards issued by any bank in the world.
Write to our visa specialist in chat, send a copy of your passport and a photo, and we will take it from there.
