Do Swedish citizens need a visa for Indonesia?
Yes. Sweden is one of the 97 countries whose citizens can use the visa on arrival, and since 2023 that visa is issued online as the eVOA. The government fee is IDR 500,000, the stay is 30 days and it extends once by another 30.
Swedish official advice states the requirements briefly and without qualification: a passport valid for six months from the date of entry, and a return ticket. Both are checked at the border, and not having a return ticket is a real reason to be refused boarding back in Stockholm.
What the e-VOA gives you
Point by point: how you apply, how long the visa itself is valid and how long you may actually stay.
- How it is issued. Entirely online, through the Indonesian immigration portal. You receive a PDF with a number and a QR code. Print it or keep it on your phone.
- Validity. 90 days from the date of issue. You can enter on any day inside that window, including the last one.
- Length of stay. 30 days, counted from the day you cross the border. The day you land counts as day one.
- Extension. Once, for another 30 days. The maximum on this visa is 60 days in one trip.
- Entries. Single. If you pop over to Singapore for a weekend, the visa is used up and you need a new one to come back.
❗ Planning more than 60 days? Do not rely on the e-VOA. Apply for a C1 tourist visa before you fly. You cannot switch from an e-VOA to a C1 inside Indonesia, you would have to leave the country and apply from abroad.
How the extension works
Start the extension about two weeks before your 30 days run out. Do not leave it to the last day. The application goes in online, then immigration gives you a date to come to the nearest office once, for a photo and fingerprints. The official extension fee is IDR 500,000.
We handle the paperwork and the appointment for you. If you already know you want the full 60 days, take the "e-VOA for 60 days" option in the price list below and stop thinking about it.
What documents you need
The list is short, and most of it is already on your phone.
- A colour scan or photo of the bio-data page of your passport. It has to be valid for at least 6 months on the day you enter Indonesia.
- A photo on a plain white background. A phone selfie is fine, no studio needed.
- The address where you will stay in Indonesia. A hotel booking is enough.
- A booking for a return or onward flight.
❗ Every child needs a separate visa, including infants. A child cannot travel on a parent's e-VOA.
Two things that catch Swedish travellers out.
The six months are counted from the date printed in your passport. Indonesian officers do not care when it was issued or whether extra months were added to it years ago. Look at the expiry date on the photo page and count from there.
An open-dated ticket will not do. Swedish advice lists the return ticket as a required document alongside the passport, and it needs a fixed date of departure from Indonesia.

The Sanur consular cluster
Sweden's honorary consulate on Bali is in Sanur: Segara Village Hotel, Jl. Segara Ayu, Denpasar 80228. Honorary Consul Catharine Palmira Oprandi Arnany, appointed in November 2023; consular assistant Dayu Mita. +62 361 282 223, mobile +62 822 6699 6429, swedishconsulatebali@gmail.com, Monday to Friday 10:00–13:00 and 14:00–15:00.
Here is the curious part: the honorary consulates of Norway and Finland share that address and that telephone number, and the Czech one stands a couple of hundred metres away at the Griya Santrian hotel on the same street.
The explanation is straightforward. An honorary consul is not a career diplomat but a respected local — usually a businessperson — who takes on representative duties. In Sanur the Nordic trade has been handled by hotel families for decades, and the consular appointments settled where the infrastructure and the languages already were.
For a traveller it means consular help for Nordic citizens on Bali is concentrated in one part of Sanur rather than scattered across the island. The embassy is in Jakarta; the ministry's duty officer in Stockholm answers around the clock on +46 8 405 50 05.
As an EU citizen a Swede may approach any other member state's mission where Sweden is not represented, under Council Directive 2015/637; as a Nordic citizen, any other Nordic mission, under Article 31 of the 1962 Helsinki Treaty. On Bali neither is needed — the Swedish consulate is right here.
How the Swedish embassy reads the situation
The embassy calls Indonesia a relatively safe country, with the caveat that conditions differ sharply between regions and that natural disasters happen here regularly.
Terrorist attacks, in the embassy's assessment, have fallen markedly since the early 2000s without disappearing altogether. Two areas are singled out: Papua and West Papua, the most unstable regions, with armed groups and sudden internet shutdowns; and Aceh, much calmer since the 2005 peace agreement but governed by sharia law, which creates uncertainty for foreigners.
Bali is not on the list of problem regions.
Your pre-flight checklist
Run through this the night before. These are exactly the things passport control will ask for.
- Passport valid at least 6 months from the date of entry, with two blank pages.
- The e-VOA saved on your phone and printed.
- The All Indonesia arrival card completed and its QR code saved.
- If you are flying to Bali, the tourist levy paid and its QR code saved.
What is the All Indonesia arrival card?
It is a free electronic form that every traveller arriving in Indonesia has to complete. It became compulsory on 1 October 2025 and replaced four separate documents at once: the immigration arrival card, the customs declaration, the quarantine declaration and the health pass.
You fill it in on the official site or in the All Indonesia app. The window is three days before arrival, and you can also do it on landing, though filling it in before you board is calmer. Once you submit it, a QR code arrives by email. That QR code is what you show at passport control.
❗ The arrival card is not a visa and does not replace one. You need both.
Swedish advice calls the form the e-CD and gives two ways to file it: the All Indonesia app or allindonesia.imigrasi.go.id. The detail that matters is the lower edge of the window: no earlier than three days before arrival. Filing a week ahead is not possible — the form will not take the dates — and filling it in the queue at passport control is a reliable way to lose half an hour.
The order of operations: eVOA well in advance, the Bali tourist levy online before departure, and the arrival form the day before you fly.
How much is the Bali tourist levy?
IDR 150,000 per person, around USD 9.50. It applies to everyone who does anything touristy on the island, children included, whatever the purpose of the trip.
You pay on the official site or in the Love Bali app. Cash is not accepted, only cards, bank transfer or QRIS. The levy is paid once per trip and any time before you leave Indonesia, but the sensible moment is before departure. Save the QR code you get by email: it is scanned as you walk out of the arrivals area at Ngurah Rai Airport or at Benoa seaport.
Landing in Jakarta and never going to Bali? Then you do not pay it.
What overstaying actually costs
Most European ministries stop at the word "fine". The Swedish one sets out the consequences step by step, and it is worth reading:
- A fine of IDR 1,000,000 for every day of overstay, paid at the airport as you leave.
- Detention by immigration. The ministry notes specifically that conditions in Indonesian immigration detention do not meet Swedish standards.
- Deportation at your own expense. You pay for the flight home.
- You also pay for the escort. A deportee travels with an immigration officer, and that officer's flight is on your bill too.
The last point appears almost nowhere else, and it is what turns "a short delay" into a bill running into thousands of euros — on top of a re-entry ban that closes Indonesia for years.
Immigration does not accept "I lost track of the dates", so check the stamp in your passport on the day you arrive and set a reminder.
Hence a simple rule: file the eVOA extension early, not in the last week. The application goes in before the current stay expires, immigration then gives you a date to attend in person, and that appointment takes time.
Staying longer than 60 days
Two visas cover almost every case.
The C1 tourist visa gives 60 days and can be extended twice without leaving the country, up to 180 days in total. It needs a local guarantor, and MyVisa.World acts as one.
The D1 multiple-entry visa is valid for 1, 2 or 5 years and gives 60 days on every entry, with no limit on how many times you come and go. It suits people who visit Indonesia several times a year.
Why apply through MyVisa.World
We are officially registered in Indonesia and work with the immigration service directly, without middlemen. Your application is checked by a person before it is submitted, so a blurred passport scan or a photo with a shadow on the face does not turn into a refusal a week later.
Standard processing is 2 days. If you are flying tomorrow, the express service submits your application ahead of the queue and the visa usually arrives within 2 hours. We accept cards issued by any bank in the world.
Write to our visa specialist in chat, send a copy of your passport and a photo, and we will take it from there.
