Do Portuguese citizens need a visa for Indonesia?
Yes. Portugal is one of the ninety-seven countries whose citizens can use the visa on arrival, and it is issued online — the eVOA. The fee is IDR 500,000, the stay is thirty days with one extension of another thirty. The visa itself is valid for ninety days from the date of issue: that is the window in which you have to enter, not the length of your stay.
A passport with at least six months of validity on the date of entry, blank pages, and a return or onward ticket with a fixed date. Since 1 October 2025 everyone needs the All Indonesia arrival card: completed online no earlier than three days before departure, it replaces four old forms at once — customs, immigration, health and quarantine. You get a QR code, and that is what you show at the border.
And one separate line of expense on Bali: the tourist levy, IDR 150,000 per person, paid once, online or on arrival.
What the e-VOA gives you
Point by point: how you apply, how long the visa itself is valid and how long you may actually stay.
- How it is issued. Entirely online, through the Indonesian immigration portal. You receive a PDF with a number and a QR code. Print it or keep it on your phone.
- Validity. 90 days from the date of issue. You can enter on any day inside that window, including the last one.
- Length of stay. 30 days, counted from the day you cross the border. The day you land counts as day one.
- Extension. Once, for another 30 days. The maximum on this visa is 60 days in one trip.
- Entries. Single. If you pop over to Singapore for a weekend, the visa is used up and you need a new one to come back.
❗ Planning more than 60 days? Do not rely on the e-VOA. Apply for a C1 tourist visa before you fly. You cannot switch from an e-VOA to a C1 inside Indonesia, you would have to leave the country and apply from abroad.
How the extension works
Start the extension about two weeks before your 30 days run out. Do not leave it to the last day. The application goes in online, then immigration gives you a date to come to the nearest office once, for a photo and fingerprints. The official extension fee is IDR 500,000.

What documents you need
The list is short, and most of it is already on your phone.
- A colour scan or photo of the bio-data page of your passport. It has to be valid for at least 6 months on the day you enter Indonesia.
- A photo on a plain white background. A phone selfie is fine, no studio needed.
- The address where you will stay in Indonesia. A hotel booking is enough.
- A booking for a return or onward flight.
❗ Every child needs a separate visa, including infants. A child cannot travel on a parent's e-VOA.
Two things that catch Portuguese travellers out.
The six months are counted from the date printed in your passport. Indonesian officers do not care when it was issued or whether extra months were added to it years ago. Look at the expiry date on the photo page and count from there.
The dated return ticket is checked in Europe. It is an eVOA requirement, and it is sometimes asked for at the Lisbon check-in desk before Indonesia is even involved. An open date, or "I will buy one there", does not count.

Note the emergency number: it is Indonesian. Out of hours you reach someone inside the country rather than a duty desk in Lisbon. That difference matters when you are calling on a Sunday from a police station in Kuta.
What the list does not show is any Portuguese office on Bali — no consulate, no consular agency, nothing you can walk into. Denpasar to Jakarta is about a two-hour flight, and anything that needs a stamped document goes through the capital.
If you lose your passport: police report first, then the embassy. As an EU citizen you may also approach any other member state's mission — Council Directive 2015/637 gives you that right where your own country is not represented, and on Bali none of the three countries in this series is. If your flight is tomorrow, the nearest European mission on the island is faster than the capital.
Allow several days for a replacement document and do not count on flying out as originally booked.
Registo Viajante
Portugal's travel registration scheme is called Registo Viajante. It is voluntary, run by the Directorate-General for Consular Affairs and Portuguese Communities, and comes with a mobile app.
You enter yourself, your dates and the places you are going. In return the app pushes country safety guidance and alerts about areas to avoid, and keeps Portuguese diplomatic contacts in one place. In a crisis — natural disaster, unrest, a major accident — the ministry uses the geolocation of registered travellers to work out who is in the affected area and to reach them. The Gabinete de Emergência Consular, the consular emergency office, coordinates that.
The government is candid about the limits: registering creates no obligation for the state to intervene, and the ministry accepts no liability for damage arising from its advice. It is a channel, not insurance.
For Indonesia the point is obvious. The country sits on a plate boundary — earthquakes, volcanoes and tsunami are background, not exotica. From September to February add heavy rain, flooding and landslides, with mountain roads on Bali and Java occasionally closed. If you are going beyond the beach strip, five minutes of registration pays for itself with one alert.
TAP does not fly to Asia at all
There is no direct Lisbon–Denpasar flight, which is no surprise. The surprise is this: TAP Air Portugal's route network contains no Asian destination whatsoever — Europe, Africa and the Americas only. Portugal's flag carrier does not serve Asia anywhere.
So the Asian leg of your trip will be flown by someone else regardless, and the real choice is which hub: Doha, Dubai, Istanbul, Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, Amsterdam or Paris. From Porto or Faro that usually means two connections; from Lisbon, one or two.
- Book it as one ticket. Two separate bookings mean the second carrier owes you nothing if the first leg runs late — and Indonesian border control will still want proof of onward travel.
- A return or onward ticket with a fixed date is mandatory. It is an e-VOA requirement and it does get checked, sometimes at the Lisbon check-in desk before Indonesia is even involved.
One more thing about transit: if your routing passes through a country that requires a transit visa on a Portuguese passport, sort that out before you buy. Guangzhou and Dubai are no trouble; the United States is, because ESTA is required even airside.
The Portuguese words you will recognise in Indonesian
The Portuguese were the first Europeans in these waters, from the early sixteenth century — Malacca, the Moluccas, Solor and Flores. The empire did not hold, but the language stayed. Modern Indonesian carries several dozen Portuguese loanwords, and you will hear most of them without a dictionary.
Gereja from igreja, church. Meja from mesa, table. Jendela from janela, window. Bendera from bandeira, flag. Sepatu from sapato, shoe. Keju from queijo, cheese. Mentega from manteiga, butter. Sabun from sabão, soap. Garpu from garfo, fork. Boneka from boneca, doll. Lemari from armário, cupboard. Pesta from festa, party. Minggu from domingo — Sunday, and also week. Natal, Christmas, unchanged.
It is useful as well as charming: keju and mentega on a warung menu read themselves, and you will get Minggu in an opening-hours notice right the first time.
The deepest trace lies east of Bali, in Larantuka on Flores, where a sixteenth- and seventeenth-century Portuguese Catholic presence left a community whose Holy Week still carries its Portuguese name. That is two flights from Denpasar and a very different Indonesia from Canggu.
Your pre-flight checklist
Run through this the night before. These are exactly the things passport control will ask for.
- Passport valid at least 6 months from the date of entry, with two blank pages.
- The e-VOA saved on your phone and printed.
- The All Indonesia arrival card completed and its QR code saved.
- If you are flying to Bali, the tourist levy paid and its QR code saved.
What is the All Indonesia arrival card?
It is a free electronic form that every traveller arriving in Indonesia has to complete. It became compulsory on 1 October 2025 and replaced four separate documents at once: the immigration arrival card, the customs declaration, the quarantine declaration and the health pass.
You fill it in on the official site or in the All Indonesia app. The window is three days before arrival, and you can also do it on landing, though filling it in before you board is calmer. Once you submit it, a QR code arrives by email. That QR code is what you show at passport control.
❗ The arrival card is not a visa and does not replace one. You need both.
How much is the Bali tourist levy?
IDR 150,000 per person, about USD 9.50. It applies to everyone who does anything touristy on the island, children included, whatever the purpose of the trip.
You pay on the official site or in the Love Bali app. Cash is not accepted, only cards, bank transfer or QRIS. The levy is paid once per trip and any time before you leave Indonesia, but the sensible moment is before departure. Save the QR code you get by email: it is scanned as you walk out of the arrivals area at Ngurah Rai Airport or at Benoa seaport.
Landing in Jakarta and never going to Bali? Then you do not pay it.
What happens if you overstay
The fine is IDR 1,000,000 for every day beyond your permitted stay, and you pay it at the airport as you leave. A long overstay is a different matter and can end in detention, deportation and a ban on returning. Immigration does not accept "I lost track of the dates", so check the stamp in your passport on the day you arrive and set a reminder.
Staying longer than 60 days
Two visas cover almost every case.
The C1 tourist visa gives 60 days and can be extended twice without leaving the country, up to 180 days in total. It needs a local guarantor, and MyVisa.World acts as one.
