Do Hungarian citizens need a visa for Indonesia?
Yes. Hungary is one of the ninety-seven countries whose citizens can use the visa on arrival, and it is issued online as the eVOA. The government fee is IDR 500,000, the stay is 30 days and it extends once by another 30. You apply at evisa.imigrasi.go.id before you fly, and the visa is valid for 90 days from the date of issue.
The passport needs at least six months of validity on the date of entry and blank pages for the stamp, plus a return or onward ticket with a fixed date. Two more things are compulsory: the All Indonesia arrival card, completed no earlier than 72 hours before boarding, and the Bali tourist levy — IDR 150,000 per person, once per trip.
What the e-VOA gives you
Point by point: how you apply, how long the visa itself is valid and how long you may actually stay.
- How it is issued. Entirely online, through the Indonesian immigration portal. You receive a PDF with a number and a QR code. Print it or keep it on your phone.
- Validity. 90 days from the date of issue. You can enter on any day inside that window, including the last one.
- Length of stay. 30 days, counted from the day you cross the border. The day you land counts as day one.
- Extension. Once, for another 30 days. The maximum on this visa is 60 days in one trip.
- Entries. Single. If you pop over to Singapore for a weekend, the visa is used up and you need a new one to come back.
❗ Planning more than 60 days? Do not rely on the e-VOA. Apply for a C1 tourist visa before you fly. You cannot switch from an e-VOA to a C1 inside Indonesia, you would have to leave the country and apply from abroad.
How the extension works
Start the extension about two weeks before your 30 days run out. Do not leave it to the last day. The application goes in online, then immigration gives you a date to come to the nearest office once, for a photo and fingerprints. The official extension fee is IDR 500,000.

What documents you need
The list is short, and most of it is already on your phone.
- A colour scan or photo of the bio-data page of your passport. It has to be valid for at least 6 months on the day you enter Indonesia.
- A photo on a plain white background. A phone selfie is fine, no studio needed.
- The address where you will stay in Indonesia. A hotel booking is enough.
- A booking for a return or onward flight.
❗ Every child needs a separate visa, including infants. A child cannot travel on a parent's e-VOA.
One thing catches travellers out more often than anything else.
The six months are counted from the date printed in your passport. Indonesian officers do not care when it was issued or whether extra months were added to it years ago. Look at the expiry date on the photo page and count from there.

Your Hungarian name in a visa form: where people get it wrong
Spend five minutes on this before you apply. It is the one mistake that costs real money.
Hungarian writes the name the other way round: family name first, given name second. Szabó Éva is Éva Szabó. A Hungarian writes it that way at school, at work and in every letter. The passport does not. It has two labelled fields — Vezetéknév / Surname and Utónév / Given names — and each holds exactly what it says.
The trouble starts when you fill in the visa form or book the ticket and type the name the way you always write it. The given name lands in Surname and the family name in Given name. Indonesian border systems compare your application against the machine-readable zone of the passport, and a swapped pair is a mismatch. You will be sorting it out at the counter rather than at home.
The rule never changes: copy the fields, not the habit. Whatever sits in Surname goes into Surname. Whatever sits in Given names goes into Given names.
Then there is the Hungarian married-name question, which has no equivalent anywhere else. Hungarian law allows several forms, and passports carry them: Szabóné Kovács Éva and Szabó-Kovács Éva are both lawful. The key point is that -né is not a prefix or a title — it is part of the surname. If the passport says "Szabóné Kovács", then "Szabóné Kovács" goes into the Surname field whole, suffix included, nothing rearranged. Same with the hyphenated form: keep the hyphen.
Finally, diacritics. Hungarian names carry á, é, í, ó, ö, ő, ú, ü, ű, and the machine-readable zone strips them — Ő becomes O, Ű becomes U. If a form refuses Hungarian characters, use the machine-readable version, not an invented substitute. The German "oe" and "ue" convention does not apply to Hungarian.
What a Hungarian consul on Bali can actually do
Hungary is better placed in Indonesia than most EU states: a full embassy in Jakarta and four honorary consuls — Bandung, Surabaya, Yogyakarta and Denpasar. Denpasar is Bali, and Bali is where you will be.

Here is the part that has no parallel among Hungary's neighbours. The ministry's own list carries a note against Denpasar: the consul is authorised to issue consular certificates under section 14 (6) of Act XLVI of 2001 on consular protection. Of the four Hungarian honorary consuls in Indonesia, only this one carries it.
In practice that means a document with consular force, issued on the island — attesting a signature, a copy, a fact, a state of affairs. Police, hospitals, insurers and airlines all understand such a paper, and you do not have to fly to Jakarta to get one.
What the honorary consul does not do is issue passports. A lost or stolen document means an emergency passport from the embassy in Jakarta — Jalan Rasuna Said Kav. X/3, Kuningan, +62 21 520 3459, consulate.jkt@mfa.gov.hu. The order is: police report, then the consul on Bali, then the embassy through him. Allow several days and do not count on your original flight.
The embassy can also advance a repatriation loan if you are stranded with no other source of funds. It is equally clear about what it will not do: book flights or hotels, represent you in court, pay fines or medical bills, or chase debts on your behalf.
Konzinfo Utazom and the 24-hour line
Hungary's travel registration is registration for consular protection, run through the Consular Service's free app Konzinfo Utazom and the Konzinfo Ügysegéd portal. It carries country advice, mission contacts and — the point of the exercise — alerts pushed to registered travellers when something happens where they are.
Registration is voluntary. Its purpose is narrow and useful: if a volcano erupts or an airport closes, the ministry knows you are there and can reach you. In Indonesia that is not hypothetical. Denpasar airport has been closed by volcanic ash more than once.

One detail most Hungarians do not know: the Jakarta embassy formally represents more than Hungarians. Under the EU representation arrangements it also covers citizens of Lithuania in Indonesia. If you are travelling with a Lithuanian friend, you are both knocking on the same door.
Your pre-flight checklist
Run through this the night before. These are exactly the things passport control will ask for.
- Passport valid at least 6 months from the date of entry, with two blank pages.
- The e-VOA saved on your phone and printed.
- The All Indonesia arrival card completed and its QR code saved.
- If you are flying to Bali, the tourist levy paid and its QR code saved.
What is the All Indonesia arrival card?
It is a free electronic form that every traveller arriving in Indonesia has to complete. It became compulsory on 1 October 2025 and replaced four separate documents at once: the immigration arrival card, the customs declaration, the quarantine declaration and the health pass.
You fill it in on the official site or in the All Indonesia app. The window is three days before arrival, and you can also do it on landing, though filling it in before you board is calmer. Once you submit it, a QR code arrives by email. That QR code is what you show at passport control.
❗ The arrival card is not a visa and does not replace one. You need both.
How much is the Bali tourist levy?
IDR 150,000 per person, about USD 9.50. It applies to everyone who does anything touristy on the island, children included, whatever the purpose of the trip.
You pay on the official site or in the Love Bali app. Cash is not accepted, only cards, bank transfer or QRIS. The levy is paid once per trip and any time before you leave Indonesia, but the sensible moment is before departure. Save the QR code you get by email: it is scanned as you walk out of the arrivals area at Ngurah Rai Airport or at Benoa seaport.
Landing in Jakarta and never going to Bali? Then you do not pay it.
Getting to Indonesia from Hungary
There are no nonstop flights from Budapest to Denpasar. The realistic options are a single change in Istanbul, Doha, Dubai or Singapore, seventeen to twenty hours door to door.
Get the eVOA before you leave Hungary: it arrives as a PDF, and you may be asked to show it at the gate for the long-haul flight.
What happens if you overstay
The fine is IDR 1,000,000 for every day beyond your permitted stay, and you pay it at the airport as you leave. A long overstay is a different matter and can end in detention, deportation and a ban on returning. Immigration does not accept "I lost track of the dates", so check the stamp in your passport on the day you arrive and set a reminder.
Staying longer than 60 days
Two visas cover almost every case.
The C1 tourist visa gives 60 days and can be extended twice without leaving the country, up to 180 days in total. It needs a local guarantor, and MyVisa.World acts as one.
