Do Dutch citizens need a visa for Indonesia?
Yes. The shared history of the two countries has no bearing on entry rules: a Netherlands passport gives no visa-free entry to Indonesia. The Netherlands is one of the 97 countries whose citizens can use the visa on arrival, and it is issued online as the e-VOA — 30 days, extendable once by another 30.
The Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs puts the document requirement this way: a passport valid for at least six months from the date of entry. And it adds a second condition that most people miss.
Your passport must be intact, not merely valid
Dutch travel advice says it plainly: a damaged passport is not valid for entry or exit. Damage includes water marks and torn pages.
This is not a formality. Indonesian border officers turn people back over a swollen or delaminating data page, and there is no appeal at the counter — you fly home at your own expense. A passport that has been through a wet backpack or a washing machine is better replaced at home than tested at Ngurah Rai.
There is a second implication: check the details on your eVOA application against the machine-readable zone — the two lines of capitals at the bottom of the data page. The visa is tied to the document number, and a single wrong character means you effectively have no visa.
What the e-VOA gives you
Point by point: how you apply, how long the visa itself is valid and how long you may actually stay.
- How it is issued. Entirely online, through the Indonesian immigration portal. You receive a PDF with a number and a QR code. Print it or keep it on your phone.
- Validity. 90 days from the date of issue. You can enter on any day inside that window, including the last one.
- Length of stay. 30 days, counted from the day you cross the border. The day you land counts as day one.
- Extension. Once, for another 30 days. The maximum on this visa is 60 days in one trip.
- Entries. Single. If you pop over to Singapore for a weekend, the visa is used up and you need a new one to come back.
❗ Planning more than 60 days? Do not rely on the e-VOA. Apply for a C1 tourist visa before you fly. You cannot switch from an e-VOA to a C1 inside Indonesia, you would have to leave the country and apply from abroad.
How the extension works
Start the extension about two weeks before your 30 days run out. Do not leave it to the last day. The application goes in online, then immigration gives you a date to come to the nearest office once, for a photo and fingerprints. The official extension fee is IDR 500,000.
We handle the paperwork and the appointment for you. If you already know you want the full 60 days, take the "e-VOA for 60 days" option in the price list below and stop thinking about it.
What documents you need
The list is short, and most of it is already on your phone.
- A colour scan or photo of the bio-data page of your passport. It has to be valid for at least 6 months on the day you enter Indonesia.
- A photo on a plain white background. A phone selfie is fine, no studio needed.
- The address where you will stay in Indonesia. A hotel booking is enough.
- A booking for a return or onward flight.
❗ Every child needs a separate visa, including infants. A child cannot travel on a parent's e-VOA.
Two things worth remembering.
The six months are counted from the date printed in your passport. Indonesian officers do not care when it was issued or whether extra months were added to it years ago. Look at the expiry date on the photo page and count from there.
Dual nationals should pick one passport and stick to it. The visa is tied to the document number, so you have to enter and leave Indonesia on the same passport you gave us.

Who helps a Dutch citizen on Bali — and what they cannot do
There is an honorary consulate of the Netherlands on Bali: Honorary Consul Simon Purwa, Jalan Raya Kuta 127, Kuta, Denpasar 80001, +62 361 761502, kuta@nlhonoraryconsul.nl, Monday to Friday 10:00–12:00.
But the Ministry of Foreign Affairs states directly that consular services are not provided there. No passports, no emergency travel documents, no visas, no residence certificates. All of that runs through the embassy in Jakarta and the NetherlandsWorldwide portal.
An honorary consul is a contact point and first-line help — someone who will tell you whom to call, reach the embassy for you, support you at a hospital or a police station. Not someone who issues documents.
In practice, if you lose your passport on Bali: police report first, then the embassy in Jakarta, then an emergency travel document (nooddocument). Allow time for it, and do not expect to solve it in a single day in Kuta.
As an EU citizen a Dutch traveller may approach any other member state's mission where the Netherlands is not represented, under Council Directive 2015/637. On Bali no EU country has a full mission, so the practical address is the same one — Jakarta.
The Dutch colour code for Indonesia
Orange — four provinces: Papua, Highland Papua, Central Papua and South Papua; travel only if necessary. Yellow — the rest of the country, Bali, Java, Lombok and Flores included; travel is fine, but pay attention to specific security risks. There is no red zone in Indonesia on the Dutch scale, and yellow is the working level for most of Southeast Asia: it neither voids your travel insurance nor makes it more expensive.
Arak and methanol
Dutch advice carries a specific warning about home-distilled alcohol adulterated with methanol — known on Bali and Lombok as arak or "oplosan". Fatal poisonings among tourists are documented.
Methanol tastes no different from ethanol, and the danger is not in the quantity you drink but in its presence at all: a few tens of millilitres cause blindness or death. It turns up in cheap draught spirits and cocktails in small bars.
The rule: drink factory-sealed alcohol of known brands, refuse suspiciously cheap cocktails, and decline "homemade arak" outside a licensed venue. Bintang beer and drinks in established bars have nothing to do with this.
Your pre-flight checklist
Run through this the night before. These are exactly the things passport control will ask for.
- Passport valid at least 6 months from the date of entry, with two blank pages.
- The e-VOA saved on your phone and printed.
- The All Indonesia arrival card completed and its QR code saved.
- If you are flying to Bali, the tourist levy paid and its QR code saved.
What is the All Indonesia arrival card?
It is a free electronic form that every traveller arriving in Indonesia has to complete. It became compulsory on 1 October 2025 and replaced four separate documents at once: the immigration arrival card, the customs declaration, the quarantine declaration and the health pass.
You fill it in on the official site or in the All Indonesia app. The window is three days before arrival, and you can also do it on landing, though filling it in before you board is calmer. Once you submit it, a QR code arrives by email. That QR code is what you show at passport control.
❗ The arrival card is not a visa and does not replace one. You need both.
How much is the Bali tourist levy?
IDR 150,000 per person, around US$9.50. It applies to everyone who does anything touristy on the island, children included, whatever the purpose of the trip.
You pay on the official site or in the Love Bali app. Cash is not accepted, only cards, bank transfer or QRIS. The levy is paid once per trip and any time before you leave Indonesia, but the sensible moment is before departure. Save the QR code you get by email: it is scanned as you walk out of the arrivals area at Ngurah Rai Airport or at Benoa seaport.
Landing in Jakarta and never going to Bali? Then you do not pay it.
Which airports the e-VOA works at
The e-VOA works at the designated international entry points, and every airport a tourist would realistically use is on that list. Denpasar, Jakarta, Surabaya, Batam and the rest.
What happens if you overstay
The fine is IDR 1,000,000 for every day beyond your permitted stay, and you pay it at the airport as you leave. A long overstay is a different matter and can end in detention, deportation and a ban on returning. Immigration does not accept "I lost track of the dates", so check the stamp in your passport on the day you arrive and set a reminder.
Staying longer than 60 days
Two visas cover almost every case.
The C1 tourist visa gives 60 days and can be extended twice without leaving the country, up to 180 days in total. It needs a local guarantor, and MyVisa.World acts as one.
The D1 multiple-entry visa is valid for 1, 2 or 5 years and gives 60 days on every entry, with no limit on how many times you come and go. It suits people who visit Indonesia several times a year.
Why apply through MyVisa.World
We are officially registered in Indonesia and work with the immigration service directly, without middlemen. Your application is checked by a person before it is submitted, so a blurred passport scan or a photo with a shadow on the face does not turn into a refusal a week later.
Standard processing is 2 days. If you are flying tomorrow, the express service submits your application ahead of the queue and the visa usually arrives within 2 hours. We accept cards issued by any bank in the world.
Write to our visa specialist in chat, send a copy of your passport and a photo, and we will take it from there.
