Do Belgian citizens need a visa for Indonesia?
Yes. Belgium is one of the 97 countries whose citizens can use the visa on arrival, and it is issued online — the eVOA: IDR 500,000, 30 days, one extension of another 30, and the visa itself is valid for 90 days from the date of issue.
The requirements are standard: a passport valid for at least six months on the date of entry, blank pages, and a return or onward ticket with a date. Since 1 October 2025 the electronic All Indonesia arrival card is compulsory for everyone — completed no earlier than 72 hours before arrival, it replaces the customs, immigration, health and quarantine forms. On Bali there is a separate tourist levy of IDR 150,000 per person.
The Belgian federal foreign service reminds its citizens of one more thing that has nothing to do with visas and applies to everybody: "A Belgian citizen abroad — including a child under 12 — must always be able to present identification". In Indonesia that means keeping your passport, or a good copy of it, on you rather than in the hotel safe.
What the e-VOA gives you
Point by point: how you apply, how long the visa itself is valid and how long you may actually stay.
- How it is issued. Entirely online, through the Indonesian immigration portal. You receive a PDF with a number and a QR code. Print it or keep it on your phone.
- Validity. 90 days from the date of issue. You can enter on any day inside that window, including the last one.
- Length of stay. 30 days, counted from the day you cross the border. The day you land counts as day one.
- Extension. Once, for another 30 days. The maximum on this visa is 60 days in one trip.
- Entries. Single. If you pop over to Singapore for a weekend, the visa is used up and you need a new one to come back.
❗ Planning more than 60 days? Do not rely on the e-VOA. Apply for a C1 tourist visa before you fly. You cannot switch from an e-VOA to a C1 inside Indonesia, you would have to leave the country and apply from abroad.
How the extension works
Start the extension about two weeks before your 30 days run out. Do not leave it to the last day. The application goes in online, then immigration gives you a date to come to the nearest office once, for a photo and fingerprints. The official extension fee is IDR 500,000.
We handle the paperwork and the appointment for you. If you already know you want the full 60 days, take the "e-VOA for 60 days" option in the price list below and stop thinking about it.
What documents you need
The list is short, and most of it is already on your phone.
- A colour scan or photo of the bio-data page of your passport. It has to be valid for at least 6 months on the day you enter Indonesia.
- A photo on a plain white background. A phone selfie is fine, no studio needed.
- The address where you will stay in Indonesia. A hotel booking is enough.
- A booking for a return or onward flight.
❗ Every child needs a separate visa, including infants. A child cannot travel on a parent's e-VOA.
Two things that catch Belgian travellers out.
The six months are counted from the date printed in your passport. Indonesian officers do not care when it was issued or whether extra months were added to it years ago. Look at the expiry date on the photo page and count from there.
Copy the particle in your surname letter for letter. Van den Berghe, De Smet, Vander Elst — the particle goes into the form exactly as it appears in the passport, same spacing, same capitalisation. A mismatch between form and passport is the most common reason an eVOA has to be redone.
Send everything to our specialists in chat. If you have not booked the return flight yet, say so and we will help.
Price and processing time
All prices include the Indonesian government fee and our service charge. We accept cards issued by any bank in the world. The express option means your application goes in ahead of the queue within two business hours of payment.
Express service
Lost your passport? Call DOC STOP first, not the embassy
Belgium has something most of its neighbours do not: a national document-blocking service, DOC STOP, on +32 2 518 21 23. It is a single number a Belgian can call from anywhere in the world to block a lost or stolen identity card or passport so it cannot be used for fraud.
On Bali, the correct order is:
- Call DOC STOP on +32 2 518 21 23. The document is blocked — from that moment nobody can open an account, rent a place or take out credit in your name;
- Report to the local police. Indonesian police issue a loss report (surat kehilangan). Without it neither the embassy nor an airline will move;
- Contact the Belgian embassy in Jakarta for a temporary passport or a travel document to get home;
- On return, the declaration of loss or theft is filed together with your application for a new passport.
There is a Belgian detail worth knowing in advance. When a biometric passport is produced, your fingerprints and photo are stored for three months — long enough to issue a duplicate without appearing in person again. On request, that storage can be extended to seven years, and then a passport lost abroad does not require you to re-register your biometrics. You tick that box once, in Belgium, when you apply. If you travel a lot, tick it.
Second: consular services are for people on the consular register. The wording is plain — "Only registered citizens can apply for a Belgian identity card, a Belgian passport, or consular certificates." For a tourist this is not a problem: an emergency document to get home is issued regardless. For a Belgian living on Bali for months who wants to renew a passport locally, consular registration is mandatory.
Third, and practical: an ordinary Belgian passport takes roughly two weeks to produce. If yours expires within the next year, replace it in Belgium rather than trying to solve it from Indonesia.
Seven years of validity, and the six-month rule
A Belgian passport is valid for seven years for adults and five years for minors. That is longer than most of the EU, and the generosity has a side effect: more time passes between trips, and more people discover at check-in that the document is nearly out.
A Belgian passport cannot be extended — you apply for a new one. The foreign service itself warns: "A number of countries require a minimum validity of 6 months after the return date."
Indonesia counts six months from the date of entry. The Belgian formulation is stricter, and it is the one to follow: measure six months from your return date and you satisfy both the Indonesian rule and the rules of any country you transit. The difference between the two ways of counting is exactly the length of your trip.
Simple check before you buy tickets to Bali: take your passport expiry date, count six months back, and make sure your return date falls before it. If it does not — passport first, tickets second. The same rule applies to children: a minor's passport is valid five years, and under-12s must carry their own document.
Travellers Online: registering a trip, in three languages
Belgium's national trip registration is called Travellers Online. The foreign service lists it second among its travel tips: register so that "our embassy or consulate can support you more easily and notify you if necessary."
Registration is voluntary, takes a few minutes, and is done before departure.
Here a Belgian peculiarity shows up that looks trivial from outside and is entirely normal from inside: Travellers Online opens with a language choice, and there are exactly three — French, Dutch and German. There is no English version. Three languages, three language communities, and all Belgian public communication is built that way.
Two practical consequences for an Indonesia trip.
First: register at home, in your own language, while the interface is familiar. Working through a trilingual service in a hurry at the airport is a bad plan.
Second, and more important: every Indonesian form — the eVOA, the All Indonesia arrival card, the extension application — exists only in Indonesian and English. There is no French, Dutch or German version. A Belgian used to the state speaking their language will not find that option in the Indonesian system. Name, surname, address of stay and flight number go in in Latin script, exactly as in the passport and the booking.
On surnames: Belgian names often carry particles — Van den Berghe, De Smet, Vander Elst. Copy the particle into the form exactly as it appears in the passport, same spacing, same capitalisation. Do not compress it and do not reorder it. A mismatch between form and passport is the most common reason an eVOA has to be redone. If it happens, MyVisa.World can get the data corrected before departure, while it still costs time rather than a flight.
What the Belgian foreign service says about Indonesia
Belgium's advice on Indonesia is noticeably more specific than average.
Security
Non-essential travel is advised against in two areas:
- the Papua provinces — "Des incidents graves sont souvent rapportés, y compris des attaques violentes à Jayapura et aux alentours de la mine Freeport": serious incidents are frequently reported, including violent attacks in Jayapura and around the Freeport mine;
- the Poso area in Central Sulawesi, because of terrorism risk.
On terrorism generally: "Le risque d'actes terroristes reste réel et surtout durant (et à l'approche) de célébrations religieuses, comme la période du Ramadan" — the risk is real, particularly during and in the run-up to religious festivals.
And the point that touches Bali directly: the service records a rise in petty crime in larger cities — pickpocketing and organised thefts from motorbikes — and names three places specifically: Bali, Lombok and Toraja. A bag snatched from a passing scooter is a routine scenario on Bali, not an exotic one. Carry bags on the side away from the road; do not stand at the kerb with a phone in your hand.
The rest of Indonesia is treated as relatively safe for tourists with ordinary vigilance.
Health
- Medical facilities differ substantially from European standards; the few international clinics are expensive, and for complex procedures evacuation to Singapore, Thailand or Australia is preferable. Read that as an instruction to your insurer: the policy must cover evacuation, not just local treatment;
- bring your own medication — local quality is not guaranteed;
- certain ADHD medications are illegal in Indonesia, as is anything containing cannabis — CBD, THC, oils — even on prescription and for medical use. Consequences range from detention and fines to severe penalties;
- "L'eau de ville n'est pas potable" — tap water is not drinkable; bottled only;
- mosquito-borne disease: dengue, Zika, chikungunya, malaria in rural areas;
- traveller's diarrhoea is very common;
- local spirits: several methanol deaths have been reported;
- avian influenza — eat poultry well cooked only.
Climate and natural hazards
Dry season April to October, wet season November to March (reversed in the east), average coastal temperature around 28 °C. Indonesia sits on the Pacific Ring of Fire: minor tremors are routine, and a magnitude 5.6 earthquake on Java in 2022 killed close to three hundred people. The service names Merapi, Sinabung and Anak Krakatau among active volcanoes and warns that emergency evacuation can be ordered quickly and can disrupt air traffic. Add seasonal floods, mudslides and tsunamis, and the case for registering on Travellers Online makes itself.
One Belgian embassy for the whole country — and the Dutch issue the Schengen visas
In the European Commission's consular protection register, Belgium has one representation in Indonesia: the embassy in Jakarta, Deutsche Bank Building, 16th floor, Jalan Imam Bonjol 80, Jakarta 10310, +62 21 316 20 30, jakarta@diplobel.fed.be. Its jurisdiction covers Indonesia and Timor-Leste.
The same register carries a telling note: Schengen visas for Belgium in Indonesia are issued by the Netherlands embassy. That does not affect Belgian tourists directly, but it shows how thin Belgium's footprint in the country is — and why there is no Belgian post on Bali.
What the Jakarta embassy does: electronic identity cards and Kids-ID, consular registration, legalisation and transcription of documents, civil status and nationality matters, notarial deeds through consular posts, criminal record extracts, social security information abroad, and assistance to detained Belgian nationals. What it does not do: driving licences — "Belgian Embassies are not competent for driving licences."
On Bali what remains is Council Directive (EU) 2015/637: a Union citizen may approach the mission of any other EU member state where their own state is not represented, on the same conditions as that state's own nationals. In practice: for anything serious on the island, call Jakarta, and treat another EU mission as the nearest place obliged to receive you and put you in touch with your own service.
Getting there from Brussels
There is no nonstop Brussels–Denpasar service. Brussels Airlines' long-haul network is built on Africa and North America; Southeast Asia is not part of it. Belgians fly with one connection — via Doha (Qatar Airways operates nonstop Doha–Bali and serves Brussels), via Dubai, Abu Dhabi or Istanbul, or via Amsterdam and Singapore. Schiphol is two hours from Brussels by train, and for many Belgians that is the cheaper routing.
Whichever you pick, have the eVOA printout and a dated onward ticket ready at check-in in Europe. That is where they get asked for — not at the Indonesian border.
Your pre-flight checklist
Run through this the night before. These are exactly the things passport control will ask for.
- Passport valid at least 6 months from the date of entry, with two blank pages.
- The e-VOA saved on your phone and printed.
- The All Indonesia arrival card completed and its QR code saved.
- If you are flying to Bali, the tourist levy paid and its QR code saved.
What is the All Indonesia arrival card?
It is a free electronic form that every traveller arriving in Indonesia has to complete. It became compulsory on 1 October 2025 and replaced four separate documents at once: the immigration arrival card, the customs declaration, the quarantine declaration and the health pass.
You fill it in on the official site or in the All Indonesia app. The window is three days before arrival, and you can also do it on landing, though filling it in before you board is calmer. Once you submit it, a QR code arrives by email. That QR code is what you show at passport control.
❗ The arrival card is not a visa and does not replace one. You need both.
How much is the Bali tourist levy?
IDR 150,000 per person, about USD 9.50. It applies to everyone who does anything touristy on the island, children included, whatever the purpose of the trip.
You pay on the official site or in the Love Bali app. Cash is not accepted, only cards, bank transfer or QRIS. The levy is paid once per trip and any time before you leave Indonesia, but the sensible moment is before departure. Save the QR code you get by email: it is scanned as you walk out of the arrivals area at Ngurah Rai Airport or at Benoa seaport.
Landing in Jakarta and never going to Bali? Then you do not pay it.
What happens if you overstay
The fine is IDR 1,000,000 for every day beyond your permitted stay, and you pay it at the airport as you leave. A long overstay is a different matter and can end in detention, deportation and a ban on returning. Immigration does not accept "I lost track of the dates", so check the stamp in your passport on the day you arrive and set a reminder.
Staying longer than 60 days
Two visas cover almost every case.
The C1 tourist visa gives 60 days and can be extended twice without leaving the country, up to 180 days in total. It needs a local guarantor, and MyVisa.World acts as one.
The D1 multiple-entry visa is valid for 1, 2 or 5 years and gives 60 days on every entry, with no limit on how many times you come and go. It suits people who visit Indonesia several times a year.
Why apply through MyVisa.World
We are officially registered in Indonesia and work with the immigration service directly, without middlemen. Your application is checked by a person before it is submitted, so a blurred passport scan or a photo with a shadow on the face does not turn into a refusal a week later.
Standard processing is 2 days. If you are flying tomorrow, the express service submits your application ahead of the queue and the visa usually arrives within 2 hours. We accept cards issued by any bank in the world.
Write to our visa specialist in chat, send a copy of your passport and a photo, and we will take it from there.
